Here is a selection of articles on EBM, including the Evidence-Based Medicine Working Group's 1992 JAMA article and David Sackett's classic 1996 BMJ article. Canadians may now access The Cochrane Library for free, as a pilot project.

Every year since 1995, the publishers of the Journal of Continuing Education in the Health Professions have offered an award of $1000 to the best original research paper published in the journal. Superior original research and scholarship in the field of continuing education in the health professions are thereby acknowledged.

All Cochrane reviews are free to Canadians in 2009. The Cochrane Effective Practice and Organisation of Care Review Group conducts reviews of interventions designed to improve professional practice and the delivery of effective health services. This includes various forms of continuing education, quality assurance, informatics, financial, organisational and regulatory interventions that can affect the ability of health care professionals to deliver services more effectively and efficiently.

Here are some suggested searches for retrieving PubMed records on a variety of topics of possible interest to continuing health education providers and researchers. Most of the articles retrieved will require subscriptions.

Eugene Garfield, founder of the Institute for Scientific Information, devised the impact factor in the 1950s. Impact factors are calculated each year by Thomson Scientific for the journals it indexes, and the factors are published in Journal Citation Reports. Opinions vary as to the value of impact factors as measures of a journal's value.
